The 40th annual Southwest Volleyfest volleyball tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 30 in the high school gym. A total of 10 schools are entered and the first matches begin at 8:00 a.m. on two courts.
"Anything that has survived four decades must be significant," said Coach Steve Voyak who has been director for the last 21 events. "It started as small tourney with just a few teams on one court back in the 1980s. We even got to play during covid a few years back so I know the event can make it through almost anything."
Joining the host Lady Trojans are Exeter, Golden City, Crane, Pierce City, Wheaton, School of the Ozarks, Purdy, Verona, and Thomas Jefferson. The 10 schools are split into two five-team pools. Following pool play, the bottom two teams are eliminated. Then, the four seeds play for 7th and three seeds play for 5th. The top four advance to championship play.
"We have a cool tye-dye t-shirt design and some food trucks coming," said Voyak. "It should be a great day to celebrate the sport of volleyball."
