Senior Robert Humphries and Freshman Bryar Llewellyn both competed at the Class 2 State Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday in Jefferson City.
Robert finished 7th in the mile and 7th again in the 2-mile to earn All-State status in both events. In the 2-mile Friday, he ran a 10:08.87 and rallied at the end to place 7 instead of 8. It was a six-second PR.
On Saturday in the mile, Robert ran an aggressive race and jumped into the 4 position early in the final lap but lost two places and ended with a 4:33.09, which was a 6-second PR. Seventh through 10th place were separated by .25 tenths of a second.
Robert is the first Southwest runner to achieve All-State in two individual events since Travis Sickles back in 2021. Ironically, Travis, who now runs at Pitt State, also did it in the mile and 2-mile.
Robert now has three All-State track medals because he was part of the record-setting 4x800 relay team in 2022. That group finished fourth in the State and set a new school record.
Bryar also used an aggressive approach against mostly upperclassmen and ran a 2:03.81, which beat his season PR by 3.19 seconds, and finished 11th, beating out 5 seniors. The top 8 runners also were under 2:01.
